I’ve been doing quite a bit of reading lately. And my way of reading has changed a lot since I started writing. I have always been the type of reader that is going to find the typo or some kind of error. It pops up and glares at me. Enough of them, and it actually takes away the pleasure of the story.
Now, my OCD is finding inaccuracies. I recently read a book where the author referred to a horse’s fur. *eye roll* Not a big thing? It is to someone that knows horses. They don’t have fur, they have hair, horsehair anyone? It’s little stuff, but it’s how I roll.
This same idiosyncrasy is now benefiting me. I have spent the last week doing research for my third book. I’ll be doing some time hopping, writing past and present scenes. I want to make sure that what I write does not come back to bite me later on. Since I’ve always loved history, this is hardly a burden. Same goes for research, I have never minded doing the background work. It’s a quiet and relaxing task. Since most people don’t like this kind of work, I’m left alone. For me, it’s a win-win situation.
This book is a bit different from the first two. With the others I didn’t need to go back into the past to explain why they were a certain way. It was brought up as the story went. Book 3 is also supposed to be a novella. It’s the story of a couple that wasn’t supposed to be in the series at all. They were originally secondary characters. Not only did they clamor in my head for their story to be told, they let me know that they were mates, to top it off. Funny how that happens. After one couple pushed ahead to have their story told in Book 2, I know better than to argue.
I have a feeling I’m going to enjoy writing this next one. It’s still the same characters I love to work with. It’s just going to be presented a little differently. I’m looking forward to hearing their story. I hope you will too.
Till next week,
~ Madison
